Kayaking in Europe

There are many great places to kayak in Europe, with every place offering a very different experience. Whether it's one of the sunny Mediterranean countries or further North, in one of the wild Nordic countries, you’re sure to find the perfect kayaking holiday in Europe.

If you are looking for a one day trip, you may find the Mediterranean countries more to your taste, where kayak rental is readily available straight from the beach. However, if you are looking for a multi-day kayaking and camping trip, you should probably be heading North to one of the Nordic countries.

Kayaking the Nordic countries

If you want a truly wild experience, you should always checkout one of the Nordic countries first. There are very few places in Europe (even the world). which can offer the same experience as you can find in Sweden, Norway or Finland. Due to the freedom to roam law in the Nordic countries, you can wild camp anywhere (as long as it’s not someone’s garden). This means you can go on a multi-day kayaking trip, wild camping as you go. The West Coast of Sweden alone has over 8,000 islands, most of which are uninhabited and free to camp on. You will find there are a multitude of trips available for beginners and pros alike.

The Best Place to Kayak in Europe

Sweden offers the perfect balance of being wild, whilst still being accessible and has better weather than its Nordic neighbours. Under the Right of Public Access which is ingrained in Swedish society, you can wild camp, forage, walk, swim and of course kayak anywhere. There are hardly any tides or currants in Sweden’s stunning archipelagos, meaning the area is suitable for beginners and more advanced kayakers alike.

The Fjällbacka archipelago along Sweden’s West coast offers a mix of wilderness areas whilst still being close to civilisation should you need to stock up on supplies. Boasting crystal clear waters, rugged rocky granite cliffs and white sandy beaches, the archipelago offers a fantastic kayaking experience.

You can wild camp on deserted islands, fish from rocks, and explore the many hidden granite coves or even try some of Bohusläns famous seafood at one of the picturesque fishing villages in the area. Each island has its own unique charm whether it’s the abundant nature, or the remnants of the areas thousands of years of history.

For those feeling a little more daring, the Weather Islands (Väderöarna in Swedish) lay to West of the Fjällbacka archipelago. 365 island-strong Weather Islands is now its own marine nature reserve and you are guaranteed to see some fantastic wildlife out there including harbour seals, as well as flocks of shags and black guillemot. By camping the night before on one of the outer islands of the Fjällbacka archipelago, it is even possible to day trip it.
